IS THE AIRCRAFT AVAILABLE IN TAILDRAGGER OR TRICYCLE GEAR CONFIGURATIONS?
Yes to both, of course! The tricycle gear option costs a little more than the taildragger.
ARE SUBKITS AVAILABLE?
Absolutely. Tailfeathers are a great and quick way to start the assembly of your very own Chipper.
WHAT ENGINES ARE GREAT?
We are supporting Rotax 912UL (80HP), 912ULS (100HP), 912iS (100HP), ULPower (97HP++), and other select engines.
WHERE CAN I GET CHIPPER?
United States, Canada are shipped direct from us. Australia and New Zealand are shipped through a partner.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD?
It takes 1000 hours to build and fly. Experienced builders will take less. You can easily invest another 500 hours in making the finish, interior, and avionics meet your vision of perfection.
WILL IT WORK WITH FLOATS?
Yes. Chipper will be an excellent float plane, due to its low weight. We will be announcing a float package in 2018. Make sure you order the higher gross weight version, and plan on using an engine of 100HP or more.
WHAT MATERIAL TYPES ARE USED IN CHIPPER'S DESIGN?
CNC precut honeycomb aluminum, which is very light and strong. Aluminum spars (6061T6) along with spar doublers, for added strength. Aluminum skins on the rear fuselage. Angle aluminum and square tubing aluminum. The smaller false ribs are CNC cut plywood.
WHAT COVERING SYSTEM IS USED?
We use Oratex on the wings and tailfeathers; you can use whatever system you are most comfortable with. We used vinyl decal (sticky back stuff) on the rear fuselage. That is called 'Oracal' (not to be confused with Oratex) and is readily available from graphic arts distributors. Paint is always an option.
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE AIRFRAME + FINISHING KIT?
Not included: Propeller, Engine, Engine Mount, Cowl, Fuel Tanks, Instruments + Panel, Covering, Glue.
HOW FAST IS IT?
Top speed is currently 100mph TAS. We're looking to increase that after installing some normal size tires and wheel pants and cleaning up the cowl design. We're planning for 115 mph on 80 hp. The design has been dive tested to 119 mph IAS (about 130 TAS) -- a substantial safety margin. Typical cruise is 85 - 90 mph with 21" tundra tires.
WHAT WEIGHT CAN CHIPPER LIFT?
With an 80HP engine, plan on a useful load of 450 pounds with normal tires. With a 100HP engine, plan on a useful load of 600 pounds.
HOW DOES THE LANDING GEAR ABSORB THE LANDING LOADS?
The taildragger version uses an engineered and machined 7075T6 gear leg. The gear is designed to withstand a drop test according to US FAA 14 CFR Part 23.473(d).
WHAT FLIGHT LOADS IS CHIPPER DESIGNED FOR?
+4 / -2 G's, with a 50% safety margin.
IS CHIPPER AEROBATIC?
No. If you are looking for an aerobatic plane, best look elsewhere. Sorry!
DO YOU SELL THESE READY TO FLY?
For the U.S. market, no. That requires certification, which is gross. For Canada, yes.
IS THIS AN FAA APPROVED 51% OWNER BUILT KIT?
It will be inspected later this year by the FAA, (2017) and we expect absolutely no difficulties. FWIW, the first Chipper built was audited by the local FAA MIDO, and with professional assitance, it still came in at 60%+ amateur built.
DOES IT HAVE DROOP AILERONS?
Yes! When enabled, they improve the coefficient of lift, which is very handy for quick takeoffs and short landings. The droop ailerons work in conjunction with our enormous Fowler flaps.
